This fact may seem contradictory, since freedom of speech was a key issue in the 1869 Constitution’s debates. Nevertheless, the union of political forces will soon fade away and leave a confrontational climate. Political instability, regional upheavals and the Cuba affair are problems analyzed by the press in front of the oppressive eyes of power. Control and repression of daily newspapers means the end of the revolutionary dream.

Abstract

In the First Republic, daily newspapers see their freedom thwarthed by measures that were almost dictatorial. This fact may seem contradictory, since freedom of speech was a key issue in the 1869 Constitution’s debates. Nevertheless, the union of political forces will soon fade away and leave a confrontational climate. Political instability, regional upheavals and the Cuba affair are problems analyzed by the press in front of the oppressive eyes of power.
