Francisco Suárez today, on the fourth centenary of his death (1617-2017)
Abstract
The article’s aim is to pay tribute to the eminent doctor on the fourth centenary of his death. This anniversary happily coincides with the growing interest that is currently being enjoyed by the figure of Suárez, the metaphysical, legal and political thinker, over these last few years, due largely to increased awareness of the key role that his work played in the historic juncture of the transition from the Middle Ages to the modern world. The article briefly analyses some areas of ‘Suárezian’ thought: the relationship between faith and reason in Disputationes metaphysicae, the notion of law in De legibus and the ideas of popular sovereignty and democracy in Defensio fidei.
