Euphemism as an instrument of social manipulation

19th december 2004

Abstract

This paper tries to analyse the negative effects of the use and abuse by the media of euphemisms in the society as a whole and ours in particular. It does not pretend to stablish if politicians or communicators are responsible for this; it only tries to describe a situation. The study begins with a generic definition of the term and then the subtle change in its use through time is described. The corpus of the paper deals with a series of ideas transmitted to society through the most popular and widely used euphemisms today.
