Abstract
Cervantes’s reflections in the preface to his “Novelas ejemplares”, publised 400 years ago, are the starting point of this article that is divided into three parts. In the first part, from Cervantes’ work, we have reminded some commonplaces about the nature and function of literature that have allowed us to speculate, in the etymological sense, of the anthropological constitution of literature. In the second part, we have applauded the efforts of literary theories in order to search the poetic truth. Finally we have pointed some obstacles that, in my opinion, prevent the school reader the experience of that truth.
